ASA 101Sail Canada Basic Cruising

BOSS Beginner Course (1-3 days)

Introducing ASA 101 or Sail Canada Basic Cruising

The BOSS beginner course is offered roughly once per month. It is designed to provide sailors with no previous sailing experience with an introduction to sailing basics before they join one of our week-long courses in the Grenadines. Beginning sailors are encouraged to travel to SVG a few days early to spend 1-3 days participating in our Beginner course, learning on Saltfish, a J-24 sailboat.

Participants may reserve a room at the Barefoot base if one is available, or stay at a local hotel. There will be a break for lunch each day.

The course will cover most of the afloat skills defined in ASA 101 Basic Keelboat, or Sail Canada Basic Cruising. Any afloat skills not covered in the Beginner Course will be addressed in your week-long monohull or catamaran course beginning on Sunday.

Course Outline

The J-24 is a responsive small keelboat steered with a tiller, and is an excellent platform for learning the basics of sailing. The course will start in the classroom for an orientation to sailing in a small keelboat, and then progress on to Saltfish. You will learn how to rig the boat, how to manoeuvre the boat under mainsail and jib, first separately and then together. We will be sailing in mainly protected waters in the vicinity of the Barefoot base.
